Who We Are ...
CANADIAN POWER AND SAIL SQUADRONS
The
Nanoose Squadron is part the Canadian Power and Sail
Squadrons (CPS), a nationwide organization of recreational
boating enthusiasts dedicated to the advancement of
safe and pleasurable boating through education. We
are one of 10 squadrons in the Vancouver Island North
District, which is one of 17 districts in Canada with
a total membership of over 33,000. We are a non-profit,
non-regulatory charitable organization, and all teaching
and administrative work is done by volunteers.
Nanoose Squadron got its start on February 8, 1992, when 29
members of the Ballenas Squadron received a Warrant to establish a new squadron.
The late Mike Cartlidge, a Past Commander of Ballenas Squadron and lifetime member
of CPS, was one of the original charter members of Nanoose Squadron and was instrumental
in its organization. Mike was a tireless advocate and ambassador of CPS, and was
presented with his 20th merit mark and lifetime membership at the 2000 Graduation
Ceremony of the Nanoose Squadron.
Since 1992, the Nanoose Squadron has grown to an average roster
of 128 members. We serve a community of approximately 4,000 citizens on central
Vancouver Island, including the Nanoose Bay and Fairwinds areas, as well as several
outlying communities such as Lantzville, Errington and Coombs. We offer a wide
variety of basic and advanced training courses, presentations, social activities
and a monthly newsletter called The Rudder.
The 12-week Boating Course, which is our premier training course
for the recreational boater, is offered every spring and fall beginning in January
and September. Classes are held at the St. Mary's Anglican Church Hall on Powder
Point Road in Nanoose Bay, beginning at 1900 hours on Thursday evenings.
Squadron Bridge meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month except June and July, beginning at 1930 hours in the Nanoose Library. All members are welcome to attend! We are eager to hear ideas and suggestions for how you would like your Squadron to be.
