Nanoose Power Squadron came into being
in 1992 to satisfy a local demand for training in
boating safety.
Not all our students have been
boat owners; many have wanted very wisely to find
out what knowledge is needed to navigate even our
local waters without mishap.

A 6 week course with Bill Nadeau. Each class will last about 90 minutes depending on the discussions generated.
This course covers many aspects of the formation and behavior of the weather around us. Meteorology is quite technical in nature, whereas Fundamentals of Weather is presented in a clear, straightforward manner that eliminates much of the jargon.
The study of weather is both fascinating and satisfying. The skills you will develop from this course will serve you for a lifetime. With practice, you will be able to make short term forecasts.
With Fundamentals of Weather, you will forecast the weather beyond 'red sky at night'.

Be legal. Proof of Operator competency to operate boats with engines was mandatory since September 2009.
Instruction provides 13 classes covering boat operation, safety training and the challenge of plotting and navigation. Do not worry if you cannot make every class as many people have to miss one or two during the course. There will be no course on the Thurs before Easter.
The course runs on Thursday evenings beginning at 7.00 pm at St Mary’s Church Hall, Nanoose. It also includes two Saturday sessions on the Dock at Schooner Cove Marina and on the water in a selection of sail or power boats.
Successful completion of the accredited examination will also allow you to receive your Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC). Learn how to use a VHF Marine Radio safely, correctly and courteously.
The course will run for four evenings, April 24th, 26th, May 1st and the exam is scheduled for May 3rd 2012. Class starts at 7:00pm but for the first night we ask students to please arrive at 6:30pm. The fee is $80 for squadron members and $105 for non-members.
The purpose of the course is to provide you training on emergency radio procedures along with everyday operating techniques and hands on use of the Marine VHF Radio. The added bonus is, with a passing mark, you will also receive the ROC licence which is a Canadian Federal government issued card allowing you to operate a marine VHF radio. This is now a legal requirement for anyone operating a marine VHF radio and there are penalties for those operating a radio without your licence card. If you received your ROC card before the new Digital Selective Calling (DSC) was introduced, then you are encouraged to return and get your DSC endorsement for your ROC card by attending this short course. Students successfully passing the course will be issued a RestrictedOperator’s Certificate (ROC) including a DSC endorsement.
DSC or digital selective calling is a feature on all new VHF radios that enhances the ability of rescue personnel to locate you and provide assistance in an emergency. It is important to understand this technology and to know how to use it.
